SONY HOLLAND
Sony Holland is fast becoming one of those spirited artists who is forever linked with the sights and sounds of San Francisco. Hers is the story of a singer who suddenly moves to a town she's never visited, without knowing a soul there... who starts out by singing on the city streets and winds up on the stage of the Plush Room and Jazz At Pearl's before sold-out houses and wild applause in just a little over a year's time... whose CD "On A San Francisco High" has been praised in The San Francisco Chronicle, The San Francisco Observer, the S.F. Herald, and The New Fillmore to name a few.
Sony was born singing in the icy north of Minnesota where dad was a minister and mom a coloratura in the choir. Her musical talent led her to work with a variety of bands in Minneapolis, Denver and Nashville, but she ultimately fell in love with jazz while on a yearlong stay in Paris.
Back in the United States she formed a combo with some of Nashville's very best studio musicians and began performing regularly at F. Scott's, a nightclub where she had formerly served as hostess. Sony's singing rapidly became a hot topic in Music City. In 2002 Nashville Lifestyles Magazine featured her as one of "Nashville's Most Beautiful People" shortly after the release of her debut CD "I'll Remember Paris." The all-original CD became a staple at local radio and earned the coveted Music Row Magazine DisCovery Award. She was also a finalist in the 2002 Nashville Grammy talent search sponsored by N.A.R.A.S. and BMI. Inspired by her success in the capital of country music she decided to try an area known for jazz.
So how does she like the Bay Area? "Performing is my passion and San Francisco has given me the opportunity to sing day in and day out," she says with a big smile. "One day I may play a party on Nob Hill, the next day I'll sing at a dimly lit jazz club, or for the tourists out at Pier 39." In the process she's made a legion of fans and friends, while adding a new chapter to San Francisco's rich musical heritage. Oh, and for those who were wondering, Sony is a nickname for Sonia!
