DIANE WITHERSPOON
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Diane Witherspoon began singing as a child in a Baptist church choir. Diane studied voice at Saint Olaf's College in Minnesota, and piano and fundamental music at Laney College in Oakland, California. Diane also directed the choir at Camp Cazedero, CA and taught music at Charnock Elementary School in Los Angeles, CA. Diane is a cousin to the late "Blues great" Jimmy Witherspoon and sister to Shirley Witherspoon, former Duke Ellington vocalist.
In addition to performing with her own jazz ensembles (from duos to quintets), Diane has performed with the Cedar Walton Trio; Calvin Keyes Band; John Handy Band; Teddy Edwards Quartet; Ghasem Batamuntu's "Nova Ghost Sect-Tet" with guest artists including: Steve Turre, Bobby Hutcherson, Julian Priester, Eddie Henderson, Johnny Coles & Julius Hemphill; and also Rasul Siddik & The NOW! Artet.
She has also made special live or recording appearances with Bobby McFerrin, Cedar Walton, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Odean Pope, Woody Shaw, Frank Morgan, Pharoah Sanders, Arsenio Hall, Red Holloway, John Clayton, Abe Most, Frankie Randell, Jeff Chambers, Roy McCurdy and many more world renowned artists.
